The mid west does it best

Whats old is new agian

In my last post i talked about local talent in a harsh way. This one will take a similiar route.

Its easy for someone to sit back and talk without taking action. Alot of people talk a big game but dont actually do anything.

I feel like i can make these statements without falling into that category. Im nowhere near untouchable but i have been a part of this towns music scene for a long time. My brain is always crafting up new ways to improve this markets scene and those who know me best can speak for my track record. in fact in this post, the topic we will be talking about: Opening a new all ages music venue is something i myself will be doing in 2011.

With that said lets get into it.

Anyone whose been around local music for a while. And when i say local i mean both the downtown and “suburban” music scenes. Its sad that things are this way but they are two very different scenes. If you like myself have been involved in both you may be aware of 2 downtown club/venues. Empire which was primarily a 21+ Hip Hop Club that once and a while ran all ages events with the help of Orangevale’s Boardwalk. After Empire their was Venue. Ran pretty much the same way but catering more to the Hip Hop and DJ scene they didnt fare as well as were closed within 6 to 9 months.

A keyword that needs to be thought of when learning from others past mistakes is diversity.

Now with 2011 coming upon us we have a new Downtown venue coming. The venue which will be housed in the same building as Empire and Venue, located at 1417 R Street will go by the name Ace of Spades.

From what ive been able to find out thus far it will not be booked by the Boardwalk staff but instead the guys and girls from Sacramento’s ArteryFoundation. If your not familiar with Artery i invite you to google the brand. If i were to put a label on it id say imagine your typical hardcore to metal bands from a 2005 era of Myspace music meets Warped Tour.

I sound so critical because i am. It doesnt matter if you are or arent a fan of these genres. Anything, when overexsposed becomes stale and forgetable.

Lets go back to Diversity.

Lets think about all the other music fans. People who may not be fans of the metal/hardcore style of music making. Where is there lure? As a venue your also of course a bussiness. Everything at some point comes back to money. We have to pay the bills to keep the art flowing. Ace is going to have to step up there approach if they want to lure in new fans.

Sitting in the middle of midtown where indie dance and Dubstep are the primary genres of choice the establishment is going to have to find a way to involve their new neighbors as well as still apeall to the fanbase they have which is more of the suburban variety. Looking at the roster at Artery as well as the upcoming show calender for next years events, this is something that doesnt appear to have been thought of.

Im this cities biggest critic because im its biggest fan. Its similiar to how a father doesnt think any man is good enough for his daughter. I dont think we should sit by idle and be ok with being part of the trends but rather step up, take a chance, and be the next big thing.

Its still to early to say, with the first show not until Feb. 5th but i hope that this “big time” venue takes this chance to showcase the talented local bands we have along side the nationals they are bringing through.

I will say both the march 6th and 26th show appeal to me. Ill let you visit the website yourselves to take a peep around as well as preview my picks. I think it shows just how across the board i can be with my music tastes.
